Tech Wizard Student Awarded a Full Scholarship

Date: June 2007

Lizbeth Gonzales is a senior at Hillsboro High School who has been part of the Washington County 4-H Tech Wizard Program since her sophomore year. She was recently honored with a full scholarship to Rice University in Houston Texas where she will study engineering

Lizbeth’s tenure with the Tech Wizard Program has proven extremely valuable to her personal development, has helped her identify areas of interest, and set the direction for her future. Tech Wizard training included web page and podcast development which allowed Lizbeth to explore and expand her creative talents.

As part of the Hillsboro Street Tree project, she gained knowledge of GIS/GPS data collection and analysis. It also provided her an opportunity to speak at the ESRI International Users Conference in San Diego in front of a large audience. The GIS/GPS experience uncovered an interest in the environment and how it relates to technology. Lizbeth plans to incorporate this into her college studies. She is also interested in the development of environmentally friendly technology.

During her senior year, she was part of a team that produced a video examining positive outlet for strong emotions. This thought provoking video not only examined human behavior, it taught her content development, video capture, and video editing.

In addition to all her work with school and Tech Wizards Lizbeth helps others and gives back to her community. She is a Diversity Representative in Student Council, volunteers with the Red Cross Blood Drive, helps out at the public library and teaches a computer class each week in Spanish.

Lizbeth has received other recognitions and awards.

  • Selected to attend the ESRI International Users Conference in the summer of 2005 and 2006.
  • Selected through TRiO to attend the six week, live-in program at the Regional Center for Math and Science in Idaho.
  • Participated in SEMI High Tech U
  • Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber scholarship ($5000) sponsored by Town and Country.
  • Friends of NASP Scholarship ($500)
The scholarship provides Lizbeth the opportunity to follow her dream of becoming an engineer and Tech Wizards has helped change her life.
