Congress expects to ban P2P file sharing, companies as well?

Monday, 26. April 2010. 02:37 von 4-HTECHWIZARDS.ORG

Recently, the U.S. Congress, Representative Edolphus cities in New York introduced a bill (HR 4098) prohibits the P2P file-sharing U.S. Government and government contractor computers. This bill is likely behind the reckless loss of sensitive government documents through P2P networks, including information on the Joint Strike Fighter and the Marine One.

Congress had sent a letter to City Attorney and CEO of Lime Corp at that time to request information. I want to thank Congressman cities work and we hope that the rapid flow of something that seems so obvious. . . Computers sensitive government information is no need for file-sharing software, which is typically used to share music, movies, and pirated software. I do not want to demonize P2P, since it is used regularly to download Linux and other legitimate content, but the bill is a provision to use if necessary.

What’s interesting here is that the state standards, they seem to take rapid action to close this gap in our national security. The bigger question is, what do you do to ensure that sensitive company data and personal information of its own staff and customers is being protected from leaks via file-sharing network?

When working with companies, I find that most IT departments have a policy the use of P2P programs in the workplace. Like many other rules, even though it does not follow the enforcement mechanism available to prevent their use. In addition, using an integrated Application Control technology Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection, administrators must consider how they handle sensitive information and their firewall configurations.

When the risk of client applications to send out sensitive data, users of loading more and more portable applications that do not require administrator privileges to install, and quite a huge risk presented by the compromised sites (3 of 6 seconds) to our firewall should block all outgoing ports within our walls.

Send e-mail and browsing are the most common applications, users need to use in business networks, and that the traffic to filter out the edge. Network edge is the most common point of data leakage and bots to send out the stolen information to criminals who prey on consumers. Appliance-based or gateway DLP solutions are often unable to find the content of fragmented packages of P2P traffic, so another approach is necessary.

Another concern is why these sensitive documents are not encrypted? At least a simple file-based encryption should be ensured inadvertently sharing does not compromise the secrecy of stolen documents. Can you say the same for your important data? I often recommend users to not only encrypt your hard drives, but also to ensure that additional sensitive information such as personal data is encrypted in a file or folder as well. So if a file is lost or stolen, at least it is no longer available to third parties.

Do not let the company respond to the threat P2P file-sharing and information leaks more slowly than the U.S. government. Look at the availability of technologies and to find a way to get the P2P policy, a number of teeth.
