To find out, we tested the low-cost systems, Compaq, Dell, eMachines, HP, IBuyPower, Polywell, Systems Technology, and WinBook. Prices of these bids were $ 505 and $ 750. Although not very cheapest models on the market (we asked the vendors to determine system with at least 512 megabytes of RAM, and all but two of them), their average price is only about half the value of the machines placed the latest Top 15 Desktop PCs chart. (Even Apple is to get to work: When we went to press, it announced the Mac Mini, from $ 499.)
We found many of these workstations, most of the fine home and office tasks, but very very high-action gaming and heavy graphics or audio work. Advanced users should look at the power machinery, Top 15, but they may also consider a budget box of family members or employees of modest needs.
Again, low-premium, the offers vary among vendors, and every PC we reviewed requires sacrifices. Overall, we found a Dell Dimension 3000 is the best deal. Its so, so the result was more than compensated with an LCD screen and ink-jet printer – all $ 505. See the table from other elites.
Several amenities once considered luxuries are now. For example, all systems in this roundup, at least one USB 2 0 port on the front of the computer, which is easy to reach, and every model comes with an Ethernet port for broadband Internet connection. (Most also included a modem and dial-up connection.) Compaq, Dell, eMachines, HP, and IBuyPower systems also feature front-panel audio ports (useful for connecting the headphones), and all except Dell, Polywell, and WinBook systems become multi-format card readers that accept media such as Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Secure Digital, and XD-Picture Card digital cameras, PDAs and other devices. Compaq, HP, and even IBuyPower computers you connect a FireWire port for digital camcorders or external hard drives.
Although all the systems we reviewed, at least a few options for upgrades, no one can be converted, swanlike, part of the dream PC. Manufacturers usually kept low by using an older technology and limited components. For example, most systems here have 250-watt power supplies, which are sufficient to drive the PC set, but do not give much room for growth. And most of the motherboards support and top-level AMD and Intel processors and the fastest RAM. Although the majority of the test computers are starting to add the AGP government, they do not use the new PCI Express Bus for maximum performance newest and fastest graphics cards.
Although some of the basics of computers, however, provide flexibility to adjust the characteristics and performance of the updates, either during the initial configuration or after they arrive.
Another trend is the improved aesthetics. Although some models are amateur than others, even the most basic good contenders. Gone are the chintzy putty-colored cases, the observed systems over shops. For example, HP Pavilion A706n case is a silvery lavender with dark gray. Otherwise, basic black, gray or silver highlights, is a constant problem in uniform. And some signs, such as Compaq Presario Series and HP Pavilion series models sport the same low level of intelligent player cases, their upscale siblings.
